Flat Furniture (Patent Pending)

Flat Furniture is a dual-function carpet-to-furniture system developed over four months during my MA at the Royal College of Art. Each piece is a carpet that folds and locks into a stool, bench, or chair — providing functional seating when needed and lying flat as a floor covering when not in use.
The project investigated polypropylene as a live hinge material, fabric joinery, locking mechanisms, and upholstery construction across three distinct forms. Every material decision was tested physically — from 5mm polypropylene sheets through to leather, felt, and woven fabrics as hinge alternatives.
Featured on Core77 in October 2023 as a standout example of thorough investigation and documentation. Patent pending.
